In 1825, Cyrus Clark found an inspired and ambitious member of his staff working in his English tannery: his brother James. James noticed that sheepskin rugs, off-cuts, and cast-offs were growing and laying to waste when he thought that he could use these materials and put them to better use. And so, slippers were made. This was the first pair of footwear that built one of the world’s longest standing footwear brands.

Today, 189 years later, the Clarks brand manufactures and sells more than 50 million pairs of shoes per year throughout the world; 19 million pairs were shipped in North America in 2011 alone. Clarks is sold in more than 35 countries, and continues to grow year after year.
