Karl Toosbuy founded ECCO in Denmark in April 1963. Karl was young when he was first trained as a shoemaker, but by his early 30s was managing a shoe factory in Copenhagen.
ECCO takes a unique approach to footwear. Where other brands might outsource design or production, ECCO controls the whole process from design through final product delivery. ECCO’s designers establish collections, while ECCO-owned tanneries furnish the leather used in ECCO-owned factories to make footwear.
The company that started in a small factory in Southern Denmark with 16 employees and in one market is now produced in five factories throughout the world, using materials from three ECCO-owned tanneries. Today, the ECCO brand operates in 50 markets across the world through 17,000 members.
