The Cook family took over the operation in 1932, and by the 1970s the Kamik name, derived from the Inuit word for "foot covering", was introduced across the company's winter and rain boot lines. More than 125 years and four generations later, the business is still family-owned and run by the Cook family through its parent company, Genfoot, based in Montreal. That's a genuinely rare thing in footwear manufacturing, most brands with this kind of history have long since been absorbed by a larger conglomerate.

Roughly 70% of Kamik's production still happens in North America, primarily at plants in Quebec and New Hampshire, at a time when most footwear brands manufacture overseas. That's not incidental to the brand's identity, it's central to it: a company making cold-weather boots designed by people who deal with the same winters their customers do. The brand's own tagline puts it bluntly, there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad footwear, and the boots are built around genuinely surviving deep cold and slush rather than just looking rugged.

Sustainability Built Into Manufacturing

Kamik has run eco-conscious manufacturing practices since 1991, recycling roughly 90% of the water used in production and turning rubber offcuts into new boots, producing around 360,000 recycled rubber boots a year. Winter linings are made from 98 to 100% recycled materials. This isn't a recent marketing pivot, the sustainability practices predate most footwear brands even discussing the topic publicly.
