A Sneaker Brand With a Different Starting Point
VEJA was founded in 2004 by Sébastien Kopp and François-Ghislain Morillion with the idea that sneakers could be produced differently. Instead of building the brand around traditional advertising and conventional supply chains, the founders focused on direct relationships with producers, fairer purchasing practices, and alternative materials. That approach remains central to the VEJA Project, which documents how the brand sources its cotton, rubber, and other materials.
The V-10 Became a VEJA Signature
The V-10 is one of VEJA's most recognizable silhouettes, with its clean low-top shape and distinctive V logo. Depending on the version, the upper can use leather, C.W.L., or B-Mesh, while the soles incorporate Amazonian rubber and other materials. This variety allows the same recognizable silhouette to appeal to shoppers looking for different material choices.
Campo Keeps Things Simple
The Campo takes a minimalist approach that makes it particularly easy to wear with jeans, trousers, dresses, and casual everyday outfits. VEJA offers the Campo in several constructions, including organic-traced leather and canvas versions. The current leather version uses O.T. leather sourced from certified organic farms in Uruguay, while its insole and outsole incorporate bio-based, recycled, and Amazonian rubber components.
Volley Brings Back a Classic Sport Influence
The Volley has a different story from the Campo and V-10. Introduced in 2005, it takes inspiration from Brazilian volleyball shoes from the 1970s and gives that athletic heritage a clean everyday appearance. Current versions combine organic-traced leather and suede with an insole containing bio-sourced EVA, recycled EVA, organic cotton, and Amazonian rubber.
Organic Cotton Is Part of the Bigger Picture
VEJA uses organic cotton from producer associations in Brazil and Peru for materials such as canvas and laces. The brand says these agricultural partnerships are designed around practices that respect people and the environment, with support for farmers working toward organic and regenerative certification. This makes the material story behind a VEJA sneaker more involved than simply choosing a cotton upper.
Amazonian Rubber in the Soles
Amazonian rubber is another important part of VEJA's material strategy. The company purchases wild rubber from producers in the Amazon and says it pays significantly above the market price as part of its approach to supporting local communities. The rubber is used in the soles of several VEJA models, including current Campo and Volley constructions.
Alternatives to Conventional Leather
VEJA has also developed materials designed to reduce its reliance on conventional leather. C.W.L., or Cotton Worked as Leather, is a bio-based vegan material made from organic cotton canvas coated with PU, corn starch, and castor oil. Current V-10 CWL styles use this material while retaining the familiar VEJA silhouette.
Recycled Materials Without Giving Up Style
VEJA also incorporates recycled materials into selected sneakers. Its B-Mesh, for example, is made from 100% recycled polyester and is designed to create a lightweight, breathable fabric. Selected insoles and linings also use recycled polyester or recycled EVA, while some soles combine recycled rubber with Amazonian rubber and other materials.
Minimalist Sneakers for Everyday Wardrobes
VEJA's appeal is not limited to its material choices. The clean silhouettes make these sneakers easy to incorporate into everyday outfits without looking overly technical or athletic. If you prefer a more performance-oriented sneaker with a different approach to fit, explore the Topo Athletics collection, while shoppers looking for a more traditional comfort focus can compare Skechers.
